Iffy's Place
Upon passing through both doors you find yourself among the dregs of society.
Grizzled men and beat looking women line the bar and pool table.
The bathroom has the customary graffiti. Drinks are cheap and the music is a mix of rock, pop and country all somewhat dated.
You could get laid here if you dare as it is frequented by both a gay and straight crowd. I have actually witnessed a stabbing out front between two patrons one New Years Day.
Another night the bar had just closed when the barkeep stuck his head out the door and called over a hooker and banged her in a chair with the lights off.
Big Confusion
If you're looking for loud heavy metal music and cheap booze, this is
definitely the place to be. You won't find much more. Nor will you be able
to communicate much with the crowd hangin' around in drunken stupor. But
that's not your reason to go there anyway, is it?
The Spice of Life
This one has regrettably been given a make over, but here's how it was:Variety, according to my dictionary, is a collection of unlike things. In its theatrical use, the word means entertainment - a series of short unrelated performances or acts. The Spice of Life public house in Cambridge Circus in the late 1980's was all of these, and more. Perhaps its location so close to Andrew Lloyd Webber's Palace Theatre had some significance. The performers in "The Spice" as it was known had no professional status. They were amateurs in the plainest sense of the word. Wide eyed, they were there against all odds, out of time, out of place and, to the casual observer, well out of order.
To the passing glance, The Spice was the sort of pub you would never go into for fear of catching something. Outside, its bilious green paint and shabby peeling walls, with grimy curtains hanging from their rails and front door that looked as if it had been kicked open and shut mercilessly for years were enough to deter the casual tourist. It opens between 22:00 and 23:00 at night and it closes at about 04:00 am on regular days but on friday and especially saturday it doesn't close until Johnny's bored. The Cove Lounge
Located near the campus of the University of Chicago, in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago, The Cove is often filled with the same collection of human pickles from the neighborhood. Proximity to the University does create concerns about fake ID's, so be sure you're ready to flash the plastic.
Students tend to congregate on long benches in the second room, necking and fighting in the darker corners. Regulars often bring their lethargic dogs to sit alongside their master's favorite designated perch at the bar.
The washrooms can vary from clean and neat early in the evening to sticky with "I don't want to know" by the end of the night. Read more »

Bukowski's Liver Flush
Here’s a recipe for Bukowski’s Liver Flush, a non-alcoholic cocktail named for famous booze-hound Charles Bukowski. Juice a half-inch of ginger, followed by 2 raw medium-size scrubbed beets and half a peeled lemon. Next, juice 2 large peeled pink grapefruits and stir in 2 shakes of cayenne pepper. Add 20 drops of milk thistle tincture and pour into a tall glass.
